A school principal is a leader among other leaders (teachers). A good principal will have teachers following upon the school's goal/mission. The principal will have the trust of his/her faculty. Knowing that the school can not do its job alone, the principal must also be a community leader. To make sure that the students are as successful as they can be, the parents and community must be involved, too. We need to make sure we involve ALL the stakeholders to make the school effective.
A principal's leadership does not stop at the doors of the school or the stop sign at the end of the street the school is located on. A principals leadership is within the school building and the community the students reside in. They work with the community on engaging students for success not just K-12, but in the future. With community support and a faithful leader of the community everyone works together in the success of the students.
A principal is a school leader for obvious reasons. The teachers, students and other staff members expect the principal to provide them with guidance, expectations and safety. The view of the principal and school in the community is important to the success of the school. When a community has faith in a school, they are more likely to become an active participant in school activities and invest time helping the children on and off campus. As stated in chapter 1, "schools that bring parents, teacher, students, and others together in a shared commitment to the common good are able to use the values of the lifeworld and to get surprisingly good results." It becomes obvious that a principal must also be a strong leader in the community if he/she wants the school to be effective and good.
A principal is admired throughout the community to serve the needs of the students in the building they are serving. In chapter 1 it states the idea of "The heart, head and hand" of leadership. A principal plays roles that deal with each part. When working in the community the principal is building the school and showing the community that school is worth giving their time and money back to when needed.
A principal is the leader of the school for obvious reasons of being at the top of the food chain. But because they are a leader in the school they also become a leader in the community. When the principal leaves the school they are still the principal whether they are at the supermarket or the post office. The school and the people working at the school are supported by the community in a special relationship and it is up to the principal as the leader to help this relationship grow, creating an environment where everybody works together for the success of the students.
The principal is a school leader because she or he is who the children and the faculty and staff look to for leadership. The community also feels that the principal is a community leader because he or she has a relationship with so many people in the community.
I feel that the principal is a school leader because he or she is the person that students and staff look to for guidance. They provide the model for how we should work and play. I think that the principal becomes and community leader because schools are such a large part of the community. The principal often comes into contact with parents, neighbors, and others that are connected to the school in some way, and the principal has the responsibility to represent the school in a positive light. I think a principal has a lot of hats to wear in the school and in the community as a whole.
I feel that a principal is both a leader in a school and a leader of a community. In both, you are looked up to for guidance and instruction and must lead to be positive, effective, and a great role model. Most of the time a school is going to be surrounded by a community, so in part one does depend on another.
In most communities, the school is the central focus for that community. All the children go to one location, activities after school are held there and both parents and students interact with each other as well as other non-parents attending the events. The school is the hub holding many communities together. The school is also a place where many non-school related activities are held. The Principal, as the school leader, serves as the main contact for the community at large and becomes a leader in that community. As such, they must know their community and also be active in community functions as much as possible. While in this day and age it is not possible to keep the school building unlocked, many areas see the school being used 'after hours' every day of the week for community events. The Principal is also the leader during the day, when students and teachers are engaged in learning. They need to be available in the building and classrooms showing support for the teachers as well as support for the students pulling the education community together for the betterment of the school.
I believe that a principal is both a leader in the school and a leader in the community. In both, you are looked to as to be a positive and caring role model for all. People in the school and the community look to you as one who knows a great amount and can give guidance in many situations. When the principal shows up in community events, it shows that they care for their students inside and outside of school and want them to have success. Principals have to constantly build relationships with people inside the school and community, and because of this and their role, people look at them as leaders.
A principal sets forth a vision for his/her school. In order for this vision to be successful he/she has to have the support and backing of not only the teachers but the community. Think of it as a business and the principal is in charge of all the customer service of that business.
A school leader, whether a principal or a teacher, I believe, is in the eyes of the public at all times. I believe you are held to a higher standard. It doesn't end when you leave the school property. You should act accordingly, with morals, values, integrity, where ever, you are....at home or out in public. Shouldn't we expect this of ourselves just as american citizens, much less as leaders? It's time to just behave this way because this is who we should be as a people, not just because we want to place a "label" on ourselves. This should be a lifestyle.
The principal is both a school and community leader because naturally, they have an impact in both realms. Obviously the principal is the leader of the school, however, for an effective school community to be established all stake holders must be incorporated. Therefore, the principal is seen by the community as not only the leader of the school staff and students, but the school community as a whole.
In addition, by establishing community and business relationships, the principal can also be considered as an important community leader as well.
The school is the center of a community, which then makes the principal a leader in both areas. Because the lives of young people revolve around their education and school, the lives of the families of those children are also connected to the school whether it be through sports, academics, or other extra curricular activities. All staff are a part of the community and, as stated earlier, are often held to a higher standard than others in the community. When people entrust their children to you, you are a leader and have a great responsibility to the children, their families and the community.
A principal is the leader of the school because he/she must lead not only the teachers and staff, but the students in attendance as well. A principal is the leader in the community because he/she serves the students and families within the community of which the school is located. A principal must always be held to a higher standard then others in the school and community to ensure the success and improvement of the families, students, and staff involved.
A principal sets a vision for the school and that vision should correlate with the community expectations and standards. A principal should acknowledge that he is a role model within the school as well as in the community. Eyes are always watching Ross Matney
The school itself is a landmark in the community because many parents have attended the school(s) that their children are currently attending. The principal plays a key role in leading the school and all who work within the school, as well as meeting the needs of the community. The students that attend our schools are a product of their community, therefore the principal has to consider all external factors when leading both the school and the community.
A principal is a school leader in instruction and management of the school. A principal is a community advocate in many ways fro the students and teachers. A principal holds events for the community at school and brings the community together. A principal brings the community into the leadership of the school with decisions and volunteer work.
As a principal, being a school and community leader are greatly intertwined. Community is at the forefront of a school's foundation and success. In order for the principal to lead the school successfully, the principal must build the learning community soundly where all stakeholders involved are committed to learning as a process.
I think that for a principal to have the most success, being both a school and a community leader goes hand in hand. Gaining support from the community is adventagous for the school community and good principals have the vision to see that. Thinking back to some of the principals I had as a student, I recall how respected the principal was in and out of the building.
A principal is a school leader because he/she must serve as the model for teachers, students, and other faculty to look to for guidance. They must provide examples of how to conduct oneself. As a community leader, principals must interact with the community to promote the success of all students and all stakeholders involved. Principals must be willing to share the vision and successes of the building within the community and work with everyone closely to obtain the support that they can give a school.
A principal is a school leader as well as a community leader because the school is a part of the community. One must remember that a school is comprised of students, parents , and some teachers from the community. As the principal leads and shapes this special group of people, he/she is also shaping the community. When the principal strives to achieve a healthy balance collaborating with families and the community, the school (or students) will benefit. The principal can also help to set a tone for the community by leading the school in a positive direction. In my opinion, the school is one of the largest sources of influence in a community. If people view the school positively, then the community will be viewed positively.
A principal is both a school and community leader because he/she not only leads and manages the school, but is concerned about the welfare of students, parents, and the community. He/she collaborates with students and their families, builds relationships with the community, has the desire to serve in the community, leads by example, and is highly respected in the community for his accomplishments.
A principal is both a school leader and a community leader because of the visibility and impact that a principal has in a community. Principals have the ability to create a vision for their school. The way that a school operates is evident in the community and people in the community usually know where the "good schools" are and which schools have a negative reputation. Principals have the responsibility to develop relationships between the school and community.
ISLLC Standard 4 : A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
A principal is a school leader as well as a community leader because; the community is his/her school. The students and families come from the community that his/her school is located in and make up the school’s population, which makes the principal both a school leader and a community leader. The choices that are made within the school ultimately have an effect on the community and vice versa.
. A principal is a leader of the school and community because they are the face of the school. People often judge the school by how it is led. They work with the community as well as the school. If the principal has a good relationship with the community, they can be interdependent. The principal is the role model for the staff and students. Principals are the people who lead the school in the future.
Schools exist in conjunction with communities. The school seeks to educate the children that are a part of a particular community. Since there is a relationship between the school and the community, both rely on each other. The principal must take on the role of being a leader of the school and the community that the school exists in. School and community leadership consists of (1) providing communication between the school and the community (2) the need to harness support for the school by keeping the community involved and invested (3) to booster participation of citizens in the educational decision-making process (4) help the community to understand the needs, concerns, challenges, and opportunities of the school, and (5) school and community connections generally help bring about increased use of community resources from a solid working relationship.
The principal, whether they like it or not, is a person who is recognized in the community on a daily basis. This recognition almost makes them become a community leader because everyone knows who they are and listens to what they have to say. Additionally, the school is a community center. Groups have meetings there, rec sports hold contests there, etc. The principal becomes responsible for being the link between the school and the community that uses the facilities.
A principal is both a school leader and community leader. An effective school works to address community connections within the school-among the staff. A school is a community of minds. The principal is the school leader but he must also nurture the community present in the school. Continuity in a school is increased with a strong community bond.
A principal is a school leader because they have to lead the teachers in a positive direction. They have to collaborate and make effective schools. A principal is a community leader because parents need to believe that the school and it's members are providing a quality education for their child.
The school does not belong to the principal, it belongs to the community. Principals will come and go, but the community will always be there. Ownership of the school becomes shared only if the principal embraces the complete role of school leader . . . because "community leader" is implied. It comes with the job of being the school leader. The two cannot be separated. The person acting as principal can decide how authentic and personal they will take the role of leader in the community. I like the term of shared stewardship. The community, teachers and students will believe the principal if the feel the shared stewardship. It makes for developing the followership.
The principal is both and instructional leader and a community leader. ISSLC 4 states that the leader should demonstrate and active involvement in the community and they need to build key relationships that are essential to the improvement of student achievement. The school should the the central driving force of the community and the area leaders should be involved in molding the school in areas that will help the community grow. Education is the backbone of the community and it is the leader's responsibility to mobilize resources that will add to the infrastructure of the school. Relationships within the community are as important as relationships within the school. Both are vital to the vision of the school.
As the CEO of the school, the principal represents the school, the faculty, the staff, and each and every student in that school. Schools are often the center of a community and how it functions. This ties the principal into being a community leader. It is the vision of the principal for the school, and everything done to assist the school in attaining this vision, that also benefits the community(as they are a part of the vision!!!).
A principal's role in a community is extremely important because PR is always a consideration in any organization. If a principal supports his/her school and is enthusiastic about things happening in the school, the community 'buys' into it, and they begin to exhibit the same enthusiasm.
If you are from an area such Henry County, where the public schools system is the biggest employer, a principal is without a doubt a community as well as a school leader. If your school is a driving light in a place that desperately needs those lights, than many people are going to look to you. Many people think of their children as foundations of a new beginning, and the school is the rock or beginning for those new foundations. Also, in an area where everyone's children all go to the same school, then the administrator is going to be in contact with all parents, and communities, and businesses in that area.
There main reason that a principal is a school and community leader is because the students in his/her school are the sons and daughters, nieces and newphews, grandsons and, well you get the idea. As a parent I only know what the principal does when I am in the school which is generally during a school program, PTO meeting, or event at the school. Naturally the principal is going to put their best foot forward which isn't always a good indicator. In order for me to get a good feeling for what he/she does for the school I can look at his/her presence in the community and how he/she handles issues. I think it would be difficult for a true leader to only be a leader in the school. I don't think that when you walk out the door after the school day is over you become "Joe Schmo." Impressions are made in the grocery store, church, and on the golf course that can rally a community in your corner or drag you in the dirt.
Building relationships with all of the shareholders which include the principal, teachers, students, parents and community leaders is a vital key to the success of the school. It takes all the parts to make the whole. Many times there are people who feel like they do not have a "say so" in the decisions concerning education. The school leader is the bridge that connects both the school and the community. This is an important piece that will help to solidify an amazing foundation to build both your school's culture and the community at large.
A school represents hope and the future of a community. For that reason, a principal must be both the school's leader and a leader in the community. For many communities, the school is all that's identified as being good. Communities protect their schools and schools have an obligation to protect their community. They coexist. A principal must be a community leader in order for the school to believe that they are a vital part of the community.
The principal is both a school and community leader because they go hand in hand. The school is at the heart of the community and the community has a great deal to do with the effectiveness of the school. The concerns of a principal do not end at the door, they extend outward. The only way for a school to reach its full potential is for the school and community to work as a single entity.
The principal is both a school leader and comunity leader because the school is a major part of the community. It is where chidlren are taught, taken care of, and nurtured on a daily basis, and these children are a major part of the community. As the result of the children being a major part of the school and the community, the principal is therefore a leader of the school and in the community, leading the children in both entities as well as teachers, parents, support staff, etc; As many of you mentioned, the principal is also a major rolemodel to the children, teachers, parents, ALL stakeholders, etc;
I believe that a principal is a school leader and a community leader becuase a school is a community and the community is part of the school. Within the school community the principal is looked upon as a leader by other administration, teachers, and students. They follow the acts of a principal. As far as the school is part of the community, whether it be in sports, academics, or community outreach members of the community will look at the how the studetns and staff handel themselves and how it relates to the school, and ultimatly how the principal deals effectivly with the school that they lead.
Not only is the principal the leader of the school, but they are also one of the leaders in the community. The community is part of the school. The students and parents live in the surrounding community and many will continue to live in the community after school is over. With the children being a large part of the community, what goes on in school has a big effect on community.
The school is a major part of many communities. Since the principal is leader of the school, they are then thrown into a leadership role within the community. Especially in smaller communities. The principal has a duty to educate the students that will one day be taht community. The community knows that and takes pride in their community and wants it to thrive many years from now.
A principal not only takes part in his/her school, he/she also plays a very important role in the community. I took the School and Community Relations class last semester which was very informative on this subject. The community is vested in the school because parents, students, grandparents, etc. live in the community.
Because a school needs the support of its community, in many ways, a principal should be an advocate of the positive ways a school can impact the community. He/She should be willing, as an advocate of the school, to participate in various community activities. By doing so, she/he becomes also, a model of citizenship for the children of the school.

ReplyDeleteAs the CEO of the school, the principal represents the school, the faculty, the staff, and each and every student in that school. Schools are often the center of a community and how it functions. This ties the principal into being a community leader. It is the vision of the principal for the school, and everything done to assist the school in attaining this vision, that also benefits the community(as they are a part of the vision!!!).
ReplyDeleteA principal's role in a community is extremely important because PR is always a consideration in any organization. If a principal supports his/her school and is enthusiastic about things happening in the school, the community 'buys' into it, and they begin to exhibit the same enthusiasm.
ReplyDeleteIf you are from an area such Henry County, where the public schools system is the biggest employer, a principal is without a doubt a community as well as a school leader.
ReplyDeleteThere main reason that a principal is a school and community leader is because the students in his/her school are the sons and daughters, nieces and newphews, grandsons and, well you get the idea.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be difficult for a true leader to only be a leader in the school.
ReplyDeleteA school represents hope and the future of a community. For that reason, a principal must be both the school's leader and a leader in the community. For many communities, the school is all that's identified as being good. Communities protect their schools and schools have an obligation to protect their community. They coexist. A principal must be a community leader in order for the school to believe that they are a vital part of the community.
ReplyDeleteThe principal is both a school and community leader because they go hand in hand. The school is at the heart of the community and the community has a great deal to do with the effectiveness of the school. The concerns of a principal do not end at the door, they extend outward. The only way for a school to reach its full potential is for the school and community to work as a single entity.
ReplyDeleteThe principal is both a school leader and comunity leader because the school is a major part of the community. It is where chidlren are taught, taken care of, and nurtured on a daily basis, and these children are a major part of the community.
ReplyDeleteAs the result of the children being a major part of the school and the community, the principal is therefore a leader of the school and in the community, leading the children in both entities as well as teachers, parents, support staff, etc;
As many of you mentioned, the principal is also a major rolemodel to the children, teachers, parents, ALL stakeholders, etc;
I believe that a principal is a school leader and a community leader becuase a school is a community and the community is part of the school. Within the school community the principal is looked upon as a leader by other administration, teachers, and students. They follow the acts of a principal.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the school is part of the community, whether it be in sports, academics, or community outreach members of the community will look at the how the studetns and staff handel themselves and how it relates to the school, and ultimatly how the principal deals effectivly with the school that they lead.
Not only is the principal the leader of the school, but they are also one of the leaders in the community. The community is part of the school. The students and parents live in the surrounding community and many will continue to live in the community after school is over. With the children being a large part of the community, what goes on in school has a big effect on community.
ReplyDeleteThe school is a major part of many communities. Since the principal is leader of the school, they are then thrown into a leadership role within the community. Especially in smaller communities. The principal has a duty to educate the students that will one day be taht community. The community knows that and takes pride in their community and wants it to thrive many years from now.
ReplyDeleteA principal not only takes part in his/her school, he/she also plays a very important role in the community. I took the School and Community Relations class last semester which was very informative on this subject. The community is vested in the school because parents, students, grandparents, etc. live in the community.
ReplyDeleteBecause a school needs the support of its community, in many ways, a principal should be an advocate of the positive ways a school can impact the community. He/She should be willing, as an advocate of the school, to participate in various community activities. By doing so, she/he becomes also, a model of citizenship for the children of the school.
